Argument, shooting in Rogersville leaves one man dead, another charged with murder

Rogersville Police Chief Brian Hudson said a Wednesday afternoon shooting at Elk River Village Apartments on Lamb’s Ferry Road (County Road 91) left one man dead and another charged with murder.

The victim, Larry Wayne Simpson Jr., 37, of Rogersville, died at North Alabama Medical Center.

The alleged shooter, Curtis James Sherrer, 22, of Rogersville, was arrested and charged with murder.

Police say the perpetrator told them he and the victim, described as an acquaintance, got into an argument prior to the shooting.

Chief Hudson told reporters on Thursday, “We got a call to the apartment complex off County Road 91 that a subject had been shot, shots had been fired.”

Officers found the victim in the parking lot suffering from a single gunshot wound. The victim had been shot with a large-caliber handgun.

Emergency medical personnel worked on the victim at the scene before transporting him to the hospital, where he died.

A woman described as Sherrer’s girlfriend was detained for questioning before being released after it was determined that she was merely a witness.

After Sherrer surrendered, a warrant was executed at a residence on Lamar Road, where police found an unloaded .45 caliber handgun, believed to be the murder weapon, on the kitchen table.

Chief Hudson noted that this was an isolated incident and not a random act of violence. It was Rogersville’s first homicide in several years.

Chief Hudson continued, “We’re patrolling the streets, trying to keep them safe. I try to keep officers in higher-crime areas, where there is drug activity, in hopes to prevent shootings like this.”

While acknowledging the reality that officers can’t be everywhere at once, the chief noted, “This kind of thing doesn’t normally happen in Rogersville.”

Sherrer was being held in the Lauderdale County Detention Center and was expected to be arraigned this morning.

Rogersville police and the Lauderdale County Sheriff’s Office continue to investigate.
