SSG Sonja King-Bailey (retired) was recently sworn in as the commander of the Veterans of Foreign Wars’ East Lauderdale Memorial Post 5846, Rogersville.
SSG King-Bailey is the first female commander of Post 5846, which has been in existence since the 1950s.
Sonja King-Bailey is a native of Rogersville and a graduate of Lauderdale County High School. She has four associate’s degrees from Calhoun Community College and a bachelor’s degree in social work from the University of North Alabama. She works for the U.S. Social Security Administration.
Her career with the Alabama National Guard included wartime active duty deployments to the Middle East.
SSG King-Bailey said she looks forward to the year ahead as commander of Post 5846.
She notes that Post 5846 holds memorial poppy sales twice a year to raise money for community projects or to help local veterans.
The post’s second annual Back-to-School Giveaway will take place Tuesday, August 1, 5 p.m. – 7 p.m. at the post home. This will be free for all ages, while supplies last.
The post home is located at 12275 U.S. Highway 72 West, Rogersville, east of Second Creek beside Johnny’s Mufflers.
Post 5846 meets at 7 p.m. on the second Thursday of every month. New members are always welcome.
