Rogersville Public Library earns five-star rating from Library Journal

The publication Library Journal recently announced the results of its 13th LJ Index of Public Library Service, which rates qualifying public libraries in the U.S. based on selected per capita output measures.

The Rogersville Public Library is one of only six libraries in Alabama to receive a Star Rating in the latest index. The library received a five-star rating, the index’s highest designation.

The other 2020 Star Libraries in Alabama are the public libraries in Summerdale (three stars), Hoover (three stars), Homewood (four stars), Flomaton (five stars) and Bayou La Batre (five stars).

Among libraries spending $100-199.9K annually, the Rogersville Public Library was one of only four nationwide to move from four stars to five stars.

The other four-to-five-star libraries in this category are the Fairview Municipal Library in Oklahoma; Powers Library, Moravia, New York; and the Tivoli Free Library in Tivoli, New York.

In the $5-9.9M category, the Hoover Public Library was one of eight new three-star libraries.

The Bayou La Batre Public Library moved from four to five stars in the $10–49.9K annual spending category.

The 2020 Library Journal Index is derived from data recently released by the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) for Fiscal Year 2018.

The impact of the coronavirus on libraries won’t be reflected in the data until next year.

This year, 5,608 public libraries in the U.S. qualified to be rated in the index. Of these, only 262 libraries were named Star Libraries, each receiving three-star, four-star or five-star designations.

The director of the Rogersville Public Library is Teresa Garner. Also on staff are Andra Bayes and Jeanine Thacker.

Mrs. Garner expressed appreciation for the recognition, noting that it is extra special coming from peers in the library field.

The Rogersville Public Library is located at 74 Bank Street.
