Lauderdale County Schools ready for graduation ceremonies

Schools in the Lauderdale County School System are set to hold graduation ceremonies tonight (Friday, May 22).

Social distancing and other guidelines will be instituted for the health of students, staff, family members and other guests attending the ceremonies, which will take place in each school’s football stadium.

In the event of rain, the ceremonies will be pushed back to Saturday (May 23).

Members of the Class of 2020 have experienced a once-in-a-generation senior year.

With schools closing early due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, students missed out on a number of traditional end-of-the-year traditions such as prom, awards nights, etc.

Spring sports seasons were also cut short or canceled.

Students continued to be engaged with their education through at-home instructional packets or distance learning.

The Lauderdale County Board of Education announced the graduation ceremonies last week, with board members saying in a statement they were “excited to honor our 2020 graduating seniors. We are proud of your accomplishments and look forward to this public opportunity to recognize each of you.”

The following guidelines for the commencement ceremonies will be followed:

  • Each graduate received six tickets for family members or guests who want to attend and honor a graduating senior.
  • Families will sit together, practicing social distancing from other families. Social distancing provides that families allow at six feet between family groups.
  • All graduates and attendees are encouraged to wear face masks.

Each school will be following the guidelines of facility use outlined by the Alabama Department of Public Health. Social distancing will be observed for the entire time that staff, students and families are on school grounds.

Most schools will be livestreaming their ceremonies on the Internet.

You can watch LCHS’ free livestream on the NFHS Network or the school’s official Facebook page.

The NFHS Network will also provide streaming for Brooks (7 p.m.) and Wilson ( 6 p.m.).

Check the Facebook pages of Rogers (7:30 p.m.), Central (7 p.m.) and Waterloo ( 6 p.m.) for livestream feeds.

Lexington‘s ceremony will be videotaped and made available for download.

The East Lauderdale News congratulates all members of the Class of 2020 for your accomplishments and perseverance during these challenging times.

Next week’s (May 28th) ELN will publish (in print) a list of all graduates and scholarship offers for LCHS, Lexington, Brooks, Rogers, Clements and Mars Hill.
